A friend of mine who is otherwise a wonderful person once linked to George RR Martin's rant against fanfic with a hearty agreement within the same week that he was gushing over the Peter Jackson Hobbit movies. It was pretty hilarious.

Some people just have a bias against amateur work. Especially amateur work that isn't 100% original in origins. Once professionals (or classics, for that matter) do it, nobody cares.
