It spawned from the first calendar that the contributing artists to the comic did back in like...2011? I wanna say? Basically the picture for March was this kind of horrifyingly drawn picture featuring Eridan all girl'd up. And from there it spiraled into this...yearly meme thing and I don't think anyone who remembers the original comic is in the fandom now.
Saddest day of my life was when I ran into another March Eridan cosplayer who didn't know the origin of the joke. Those were dark times.

It is a pretty funny idea, which I imagine is why it took off like a rocket in certain corners of the fandom and apparently still has a fanbase to this day.
I did always get a kick out of people who were really into it but never saw its terrifying origins, though.
