There's several kinds of buttermilk, apparently. You can make a buttermilk substitute by adfing vinegar or lemon juice.

But still, I didn't think buttermilk could be considered a regional thing. It is a relatively common ingredient.

I thought it was common as well until I went abroad. There are some countries in which it's annoyingly hard to find and most people haven't even heard of it.
