Yeah well. I personally don't think Trowa is Quatre's one and only reason for fighting. If I had to categorise their relationship, I'd say it was a deep freindship with maybe onsided romantic feelings from Quatre's side. I'm not denying the subtext was there but to me, other pairings had at least as much subtext. But that's probably a matter of taste and of opinion. I'm not saying seeing them as "almost canon" is wrong, I just never saw it that way.
