The ones just called mangoes in stores here in the US are usually the Mexican/South American variety. They are pretty much a completely different fruit from the ones that are usually labelled Asian mangoes (or sometimes Philippines mangoes). The Asian ones are more oblong and bright yellow. And they are much softer in texture and juicy and sweet and amazing.

I don't think I have ever even seen one of those in real life. D:

They are hard to come by in the US. I grew up in the Philippines, so they were pretty much the only fruit I ate as a kid. They also make amazing shakes. Here's an image:

D: So I should change my post to South American mangoes are disgusting.

You can sometimes get them here; when I've seen them in the produce section, they're usually called "Ataulfo mangoes," or sometimes "champagne mangoes."

They do have a nicer flavor--the other kind taste like turpentine to me.
