I went through a similar process, hating DotA until I actually read up on the points it was making. The one point that I really agree with is that every detail of the author's life needs to be considered before forming ANY interpretation of the author's work, like for example saying LotR can only be looked at through a Catholic lens since Tolkien himself was Catholic. I guess that's where the name comes from. So I agree with that principle, but then if the author has the audacity to clarify some minor physical detail outside the canon people cry "NOT CANON: DEATH OF THE AUTHOR" like... why not?

Then there's weird cultural shit like people insisting that Grave of the Fireflies is an anti-war movie (because that's the message that makes the most sense to a not-Japanese viewer most likely) despite the director explicitly saying that it is not a anti-war film... Grave of the Fireflies isn't a anti-war film, get over it, I guess? I find it arrogant and belittling in this sense.

(The original context is far more interesting anyway.)

Yeah, that's the other big misuse of the thing. Forgot about that, thanks for bringing it up Scrubber

The Q&A clarification one or the cultural context one?

Yeah, I've always appreciated your opinions on this, some aspects of the DotA philosophy I accept whole-heartily, and some are just excruciating to see.
