But death of the author isn't bullshit, that's why people "believe in" it. Yes, it's kind of a dick move to outright say "I don't give a single fuck what you meant, my interpretation is the only true meaning" but that's not all that death of the author is about. It's more that the reader's interpretation is also significant.

What would really be bullshit is to say that only the author's intent counts. I remember once someone commented on a fic of mine talking about how some theme I had put in there worked really well, and until I read that comment I hadn't realized it was in the story I had written. But it was totally there, despite my intent (or lack thereof), and I like that it was picked up on and appreciated.

And someone once commented on mine that "I resent that you attacked religion" when I wasn't and didn't.
