Yep, I drive a big rig, I run all 48 states. For breaks, I usually go to truck stops, because they have restrooms and hot food and showers and things. I will also shut down in rest areas, and occasionally the places I deliver to have someplace I can park overnight. I also like Walmarts, they usually allow truck parking and are the only grocery store I have regular access to. Since truckers have federally limited hours, finding a place to park in time can get quite interesting, and this is what leads to trucks sitting on the side of on-ramps that you might see occasionally. I haven't had to resort to that yet, but I'm sure it'll happen someday.
I have had so many insane adventures! I have an epic tale about the time I first went into New Jersey, which explains all about why I hate that place, but it's way too long for me to type right now. XP So here's a shorter, happier one:
I once delivered to Davenport, Iowa, and managed to find an empty trailer at a small old factory just as my hours ran out. (It's standard practice to take an empty trailer to your next load, because it makes logistics much easier.) Luckily nobody cared if I just stayed there overnight, even though it was an awkward spot as I was nearly sticking out into the street. In the morning, I went looking for something to eat (and also a bathroom). It was a Sunday morning, and nothing was open yet. Also, from the looks of things I was in a not-great area of town. Just as I was starting to get worried, I encountered a place called Papa Bear's Diner.
OMG. Best omelette I have ever had. It was magical. *__* I have vowed to return someday. My favorite part of this job is getting to go on weird little adventures like that. I never know just where it's going to take me.
