I can sort of understand the 'not canon' part of that argument, because some fans may consider only the published works to be canon and not what information the author might give outside of that. (I favour a pick-and-choose approach, myself, it's more fun that way.) However, this is a very different thing from 'death of the author', and people who conflate the two are doing it wrong.
