But a lot G1 Transformers are based of VERY classic Japanese designs - Cyclonus, Megatron, Optimus, etc.

She's no better or worse, only that if your cultural knowledge is limiter you might only recognise Windblade's geisha-look.

Yup, this. Who popularized giant mecha, after all?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-11 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, Transformers actually started as Japanese toys that were repackaged with a new backstory for an American market......

Huh, didn't even know about this character until seeing this secret. Thanks for making me look up what's new in the comics realm.

On first view, I kinda actually like the design? There's worse ones out there, imo.

Wasn't she the fan-vote character they did?
I'm pretty sure she was designed by committee, so if that's the case I can't say I'm all that surprised at how she turned out.

Yeah, when I heard "female Transformer" I was like, "hey, alright, could always use more of those!" Then I saw the kabuki thing and...oh. Oh come on, guys...

*geisha

If she was actually kabuki-based, she might have been better received.

She is kabuki based.

Both explicitly from the creators, and to the eye of anyone who actually knows what a geisha or a kabuki actor look like. This is a Geisha in typical makeup. This is an example of Kabuki makeup. (Kabuki makeup varies from less elaborate than standard Geisha makeup, to far more baroque than this example - but this one happens to resemble Windblade's facepaint.)

While her head-crest evokes the shape of modern geisha hairstyles, that's because Geisha still wear old-school hairstyles that have mostly gone out of fashion, even in formal, traditional garb. Although the same type of hairstyle still shows up on...wait for it...kabuki actors, and in other period pieces.

Semi-off-topic, but what the hell is with that art? Her left hand is about half a mile away from her body.

I was about to roll my eyes and talk about perspective, but I just looked at the art again and... wow, you're right. The art is still gorgeous IMO, if you've had a change to take a look at the other pages.

It's suppose to be for perspective to make the pose look dynamic, but it doesn't make much sense with the rest of pose.

Solution: Ship her with Drift.

ETA: Oh! Oh! And Perceptor when he's in Geisha mode!

They could have tea parties

I was watching a rerun of Russell Howard's Good News yesterday. I don't know if this is misreported, but there was a Transformer that had its release cancelled in the west, because the direct translation of its name was Spastic. True or not, that is hilarious.

Spastic wasn't canceled, he was renamed. To Over-Run. He was never planned to be released in the UK (where the name was controversial), and was never released anywhere under the name Spastic (he was a Hasbro creation, not Takara).

Over-Run isn't the only one to have his name changed because of having a name with an unfortunate meaning in one market - the Dinobot formerly known as Slag is now Slug.

Oddly enough, has not happened with any of the Slappers.
