This, also, sucked (though I didn't see it, just saw the results of it posted here, there, and everywhere). To answer the original OP's question, I guess we all went to it being Moffat's writing, because Moffat's writing ticks every box the OP of the secret is complaining about.

RTD's episodes may have been campy and a little OTT, but at least they hung together coherently, and you could follow what was happening, from beginning to end. Regardless of what one thinks of the content.
