Did they want to exclude Toph? My word, Toph is AWESOME.

Not in so many words, but they originally designed Toph to be a big, crude, tough-talking, muscular dude (think how Toph appears in Ember Island Players, basically!). IIRC, the head writer, Aaron Ehasz, was the one that suggested she be a young girl, which Konietzko rejected. They eventually changed their mind and did go with the Toph we know today (and she ended up as Konietzko's favourite character).

I think I've heard that before, now that you mention it. Damn, I'm glad they went the way they did with her!
