...you want he should have married a bad cook? Why?

On a more serious note, that was a time period in which that was probably all he knew about her, before they got married (and she probably knew even less about him). Not that I advocate for that sort of thing today, you understand. But given the times that they lived in, this was actually not an unreasonable thing to get hitched for.

Considering the two had an illegitimate child together, he probably knew a bit more about her than that (assuming you mean the first wife, of course, but since the second wife was his cousin the same thing probably applies).
