1. Something I've always wondered about NaNoWriMo... Is there some reason you can only do it in November? I know that's the official time and all, and having it be official helps push you to the deadline, but if you are just wanting to write and prove to yourself you can do it, couldn't you set the goal for yourself any time of the year so that it fits your schedule?

But that would make SENSE.

Not the op, but my .02$ in any way. I've always found it easier to do nanowrimo in november, myself. When other people are also doing it, they're usually much easier to talk to about it, and more likely to be supportive, I would think. Even in november, I get a lot of irl friends who tell me that they can't grok why I would push myself for something like that - not even a few of them would understand if I were doing it outside of november.

Really, it's a matter of whether or not having the support and the "official" attitude helps you more than the schedule hurts you, I think. If you don't care about that support, or doing it in the special designated month doesn't make it feel more special and worthwhile to you, then any other 30-day month is exactly the same.

Personally, I think november is one of the worst months possible for it for a lot of people. It bites for retail employees, it bites for students... if you're neither, then it's an okay month, I guess, but I can't imagine it would be a better month than any other to balance out all the awful it is for the people with work or school that picks up in november.

not the op but a nanowrimo-er

as powercorrupts explained below, it's more than about just writing a novel in 30 days. that is the goal, yes, but that's not the sum total of the experience.

in November, when NaNo is officially happening, there is a huge community that builds up. energy is high, spirits are in good favor, and people are able to come together and bond for that month over something they are all taking part in. the motivation is there to plunge forward, keep going and cheer each other on.

writing is all ready a very lonely hobby, and doing something so intensive in a vacuum makes it that much more difficult to complete.

not to mention the frame of thought that says you are most productive when you are most busy because you're forced to organize your time better. November is a crappy time to do it with school and holidays and family and the like, I agree. however, if you organize your time around those things to write, many people find they write more than any other time during the year.

some things to consider.
