Pussy. (A linguistics question, I guess?)

(Anonymous) 2014-03-14 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
I'm writing a short story where the narrator is this real tough-guy type, and at one point in his internal monologue, he refers to another character as a pussy. It felt natural, like something he'd say, but the problem is that the story is supposed to take place in the late 80s/early 90s, and I have no idea if the word was even used in that way back then.

Can anyone with more knowledge of that sort of thing weigh in on this? Or someone older than me who remembers stuff about that time?

Clarification

(Anonymous) 2014-03-14 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not going in totally blind trying to write about a time period I know nothing of. It's a fanfic, so most of the setting is straight from the source material. It's just the dialogue tripping me up.

Pretty sure it was used back then.

You're fine, definitely used in that sense then.

According to wiktionary, that sense is chiefly North American and started being used sometime in the 20th century. Not sure when, exactly, but I figure late 80s is late enough in the 20th century that it's likely it was used that way then regardless.

Way back then.

WAY BACK THEN.

Sorry, anon, but...that was barely twenty-five years ago. 'Pussy' has been around for a while.

I believe the sentence was meant to be grouped like so: [...used in that way] [back then], rather than [...way back then].

It's possible, though that still implies that that word usage is really new (and that time period is rather far away), which strikes me as hilarious.

I feel your pain. How dare people keep being so much younger than us? I'm still vigorous! I'm still relevant! I'm...

Shit, I'm Pierce Hawthorne.

Let's go be Pierce Hawthorne together. First round of scotch is on me.

Make mine with tonic and ice. Hold the scotch.

Totally in use, totally character and period-appropriate.

Late 80s/Early 90s = "way back then"

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhh

/old

And yes, OP, it was used that way back then.

My father got his mouth washed out with soap in the early 50s for using it in that context.
