I'm just so fed up with the fact that every single creator of Sherlock, from Moffat to the last cameraman, seems to be a damn megalomaniac. Like, are you making a detective show or a Sunday episode of Totally Spies? Where are all the small, humane, likeable Canon criminals? Where is Dr. Sterndale? Where the heck is the CROO antagonist? The Rucastles?

Why is it that every villain in Sherlock needs to have conquering the Pacific Ocean and blowing Australia up as the ultimate goal?

Magnussen was a piece of really, really uncalled-for, cheap drama.

Still, I could tolerate him, and I like the relationship storylines. Just take Moriarty away from me, OK? He's the embodiment of everything that is wrong with this series.

It's not even just a matter of the villains. I agree with you but I think you could completely generalize this complaint to the series as a whole. There's a general tendency to stay away from the small and relatable and human moments and have everything be SO big and SO dramatic and SO swervy and the stakes need to be SO high. It annoys me.

To be fair, Australia has the blue-ringed octopus

If Cuthulu actually exists, it exists in that spawn of the devil's asscrack. I'm not sure it'd be a villain attempting to blow up Australia. But seriously, Magnussen had so much potential, and I was so excited when he was announced.

You know what I want? I really, really want Carruthers and Woodley, mostly because Carruthers is the essence of every Nice Guy (TM) I've ever met, but I'd be scared of how much Moffat would glorify his obsession with Smith (and how much Violet Smith and Sherlock Holmes would flirt).

I like Moriarty, but only because he's funny and I know that wasn't any of the producers' intentions.

Eh, I came face to facccce with dozens of blue ringed octopuses and surviiiiived. (Actually, I didn't know what they were until I posted the pictures on flickr, but I'm sure as hell wearing closed toe shoes the next time I'm out on the reef at low tide.)

I too would like to see some small-timers acting on their own, without huge ambitions or as agents of big-time big bads.

Magnussen wasn't around long enough for me to care about him and his plans one way or the other, but I did like Moriarty for the whole 'consulting criminal' idea. Still, I don't want him back. I get enough surprise returns of people thought dead when I watch Supernatural.
