My favourite book *ever* is technically a children's book, even if I think the tales in it are far too dark not to cause nightmares in an actual child (it's called Swans, Sugarplums, and Satin Slippers and it's a few classical ballets told in story form). I mean, Swan Lake is fine, but Giselle has the main character die and another be tortured to death. Even Coppelia is surprisingly dark for a comedy.
