I don't recall hearing much about world literature in high school except English or US authors in English classes, etc. But the focus in those classes is to try and learn the language, not literature.
You need to get to university to start studying world literature, I think?
But well, my high-school specialty was scientific, so maybe the more literary-oriented ones had more views on that.
