Claudio was really so stupid.

Seriously. He's like Romeo, but without the excuse of being hella young and stupid.

Unless Claudio is supposed to be really young?

I'd probably forgive him if he was supposed to be like, 15/16, tbh. But even then...

I mostly hope that the after-credits includes Hero being boss and basically in charge of everything.

Seriously, if she doesn't win pretty much every argument of their married life with, "Remember that time you mistakenly thought I was sleeping around and you tried to ruin me," then there is no fairness in this world.

"Hey honey, remember that time I had to fake my own death because of you believing Don John, and then you decided to bring it up at our wedding?"

"...What did you want me to do again?"

(but, you know, in Shakespearian English.)

Actually, if I were in Hero's shoes I wouldn't even bother taking Claudio back.

I think in modern times, I definitely wouldn't, and I think I've seen versions set in the modern day where she doesn't, but if it/I was in the Shakespearean era, I think I might, depending on how badly his words affected my reputation to others, and what rules were in place on what would happen to me/Hero after my dad died. If that makes sense?

Claudio is an adult, probably a fairly young one, but he's a grown-ass man and a soldier (and officer iirc).

Hero and Beatrice are sisters, and I always like to read them as more similar than most productions play them (ie, more like Bianca and Kate from Shrew).

Thanks! I don't think I've ever actually read the play, so I wasn't sure if he was supposed to be Wilson-from-House's age, or if that was just the casting, and we were supposed to roll with it. :D

I never really liked Shrew, admittedly, so the closest thing I have to how Bianca and Kate act is from Ten Things I Hate About You, but if they're anything like those sisters... Awesome. :D

Smart anons are correct, they are actually cousins. I clearly cannot brain Shakespeare tonight.

I actually meant that many productions (Branagh's film, not so much) stage Beatrice and Hero like they are Kate and Bianca, respectively. And they shouldn't, because aside from being a pair consisting of "older and snarky and reluctant to the idea of marriage" and "younger and more innocent and open to romance" they're not the same. Hero is much smarter and wittier than Bianca, and even though she kind of gets fucked over by Claudio, to my mind she has more agency. Her family life is certainly better.

Taming of the Shrew is a really strange play! Aside from being more mean-spirited, it's got this weird framing device where the story everyone knows about Petruchio and Kate is actually a story within a story.

I haven't seen it in a while myself, so I honestly wouldn't have realized there was an era. ^^;

Ill take your word for it; Taming is one of the only Shakespeare plays I avoid on principle, so I wouldn't be able to tell you if Hero is smarter/witter than Bianca or not. ^^; Though, from what I remember of the first time I read it, I agree on the agency/family life thing.

Are they sisters? For some reason I always thought they were cousins.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-16 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure they are cousins.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-16 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
they are cousins. though they share a sisterly bond.
