I guess my main thought is, if someone is embarrassed enough about these fics to get weird about receiving comments or kudos, then why not just take them down? No matter how embarrassing my older fics (that are still up) are, I still appreciate hearing that people still like them.

I leave a lot of old fics up under previous names. I know from experience that I've appreciated that from other writers, even if they've have long moved on from the fandom and/or are now embarrassed about them.

Other writers deleting fanfics makes me sad.

I get a little smile when I see kudos (I uploaded my old stuff to A03 for ease of the readers when I locked my LJs). However, comments make me uncomfortable. They might be expecting me to reply and I've really moved on. Plus, if I try to reply to them anyway and accidentally catch a glimpse of my old writing... ay ay ay, far too painful.

I used to delete my stuff, but now I leave it all up there. Every now and then I get a comment from someone on them, and they make me smile...though they also make me sad, because almost all of them are anon/not-logged-in, so I can't respond. :(

I used to be one of those people who deleted everything without warning and I always regretted it.

So I post any and every fanfic I write to my ao3, no matter how awful it is, no matter how drunk I was when I wrote it. I stand face to face with my shame every time I log onto that website. I think it's given me more confidence when I share my slightly better quality original fiction to writing workshops.

Then again, I don't pay attention to e-mail alerts for comments.
