I have three different reactions to fic. It doesn't matter how old they are or how much of a BNF the author is, I will probably do one of these three things:

Often: Read and complete a story, which I hadn't wasted the time, but it had one of my kinks. No kudos.

Sometimes: Read and complete a story, find really interesting elements, but probably wouldn't read it again. Kudos only.

Rarely: Read and complete a story, completely fall in love with it, and have a genuine emotional reaction to the writing. Leave kudos and a comment saying how much I was effected by the story.

The fact of the matter is, for all the hits you get, only a small percentage will leave kudos. And from those kudos, an even smaller percentage will comment. If you're an older fan like me, you want your comment to have some substance, and if your fic was good but didn't give me that substance, what can I even say in the comment? "I liked this fic, it was good" is basically what kudos means anyway.
