Some arguments have been made (I'm not saying I personally agree with them, this is just what I've heard) that the reason great swathes of the books of Moses include what to drink/eat/wear was to protect the people from unsanitary conditions that the other nations around them didn't care about.

It was a bit of a headscratcher for me when I heard it first, but I can see where they might get that. Sort of?

Oh, I can completely see that. People were dying left and right from a lack of common sense in their food habits. So, laws were made on what to eat and how to prepare food and they became religious laws. (Because it's one thing to disobey the Chief. It's another thing to disobey God.)

AYRT

Not just food, there are also extensive sections on how to deal with mould (translated as "leprosy" of clothing and walls) that were pretty advanced, given they were a Bronze(?? ISTR) Age society and all.
