A quick guide to the amount of reviews and/or kudos your fic will receive:

Contains any of the main pairings of the fandom. +20
Contains THE pairing of the fandom. +50-200 depending on the fandom
Contains any of the popular tropes. +10 per trope
Smut. +30
Well-written smut. +100
Well-written smut with popular kinks. +200
Popular AUs. +100-1000 depending on the AU

This will get you started.

I find this to be very accurate. I write a broad spectrum of fics, and, though I'd say my quality is always close to the same baseline, the amount of attention that fics get varies wildly due to whether I'm writing The Big Slash Ship, or whether I'm writing plot-y fics that focus on the female characters (my preference, in general)

Same. Fic with the fandom's huge main ship: lots of views, kudos and comments. Genfic: not so much.

Yep! This is how it's always been and this is most likely how it will always be.

Aw man :( I write smut (and I like to think it's well-written - well-written compared to the average quality, at least), but never for any popular pairings. My review/kudos count is usually around 10, at most. *sighs tragically*

It depends on your fandom. If you're in a small-ish fandom and write non-popular pairings, 10 sounds about right.

I guess in your case the "unpopular pairing repellent factor" should be taken into account and the sum should be divided by 10 (or 100 if it's also an unpopular fandom), if we get mathematical about this.

Yep. An awareness of these basic things - and what happens when you don't use them - helps a lot.

Yep. As has been said before, how the world works is not a secret.
