No, it was totally a sales pitch. :P And honestly I believe we have the best food of any religion. Fight me.

I don't know, I tend to like really spicy foods. I eat a lot of Thai food. Which would be...what, a form of Buddhism, I think?

It is delicious, but I can't go along with the idea of no pork or shellfish, or mixing meats and dairy.

Could go for Reform, they tend to be pretty chill about that.

Yeah, I'm Reform and you can pry my burger-milkshake combos from my cold dead hands. :B

nayrt: Ah yes, I have on occasion called myself a "bacon cheeseburger Jew". I agree with the other people in the thread talking about ancient laws being about food preservation, so they were applicable then but not so much now.

DA

I'm the anon who posted that. Someone in my church floated that idea to us once, they got it from some book that I forget the name of. This book they read said that these commands were given divinely because no one knew about parasites, etc., but God knew about those things, therefore gave the commandments, to keep His people healthy, therefore, proof of God/God is great.

As I said upthread, I don't necessarily agree with this idea, nor the reasoning behind it it's just something I've heard explained. Wish I could remember the name of the book....

I've heard that argument before too, and tbh it doesn't make much sense, either. If God knew about salmonella and the dangers of improper cooking techniques, why not say that? Why not say that pork is fine, as long as you cook it properly so there's no blood/pink juices? You don't have to get technical. Simply saying that there are tiny, invisible demons that live in certain foods that must be killed with fire before consumption sounds logical enough by that standard's time. Far more logical than saying not to eat [large amount of potential food sources] just 'cause.

The only way the dietary laws in the Bible makes sense is because it's written by humans, with limited, imperfect and all too human knowledge of how these things worked. They didn't know about Trichinosis, but they knew that people could get sick from eating pork, so voila! A ban on eating pork.

If you go for no religion at all, there's no nonsensical dietary laws to be chill or not chill about, period.
