Most of what gets you praise and attention in school and/or writing classes does not make you a more compelling writer, per se. This is especially apparent in situations where people are guided entirely by what they want to be reading. They're not obligated to appreciate your behind-the-scenes work. Morality stories would have us believe that the most effort should be rewarded with the most attention, but that's not how things play out. The upside to that is that fanfic is a golden opportunity to write whatever you really want to be writing. You don't necessarily have to be busting your butt in the process. If you soul-search about why you're immersed in fanfiction, what you love about this medium, and why you want to write for it, you may get a better sense for what will give you the results you want.

I write for some incredibly unpopular pairings. But I also hang around my fandom's kink memes, and occasionally people will request things for the popular pairings that spark my imagination. Writing and posting fills for those prompts has gotten my other stories more views and kudos than they would otherwise have. What I like best about it is that I'm writing only what I want to write, so no one goes "wtfbbq, I came for the fluff and got dark fic!" But I do have ties to the wider fandom.
