This. I think it's perfectly all right to be frustrated with having the fics you poured a lot of thought and effort into be ignored. And before someone screams "u butthurt!", um, no. I've written a couple of very popular fics, and a couple of not so popular ones. The only difference between them is that the more popular ones feature the fandom's super popular pairing and a few beloved tropes, and the other ones don't. The quality of the writing is the same, and the characterization is actually better in the not so popular ones.

I'm perfectly aware that tropes and popular pairings are what brings in the kudos and reviews. That doesn't mean I can't at times be bitter about how the stuff that is actually dear to me isn't. I'm only human.

Anon I think you've answered your own questions here. Thing is, of course you can feel bitter about it, you've put the work in.

But it simply doesn't change the reality. Look I like literature and read it but when I turn to fanfic, it's for comfort, I want my OTP, I don't want to read about characters I'm not interested in. Even if it's an author whose other work I enjoy, I have zero interest in reading about them so will just ignore those fics. I'm not as bothered about certain tropes, but I know that a lot of readers are. I will feel I've wasted my time if I've read even the most compelling and well written fic, only for it to end with my OTP split up.

I think it's a mix of people who read fanfic really aren't there for the literary merit, and some may just be there for the high school AU (not a trope I like ), and the fact that the most popular fiction out there isn't the literary fiction, it's 50 Shades of Grey and anything by Dan Brown, literary merit and research don't come into it.
