In some of my fandoms there are gems that are buried under piles of high school AUs and alpha/omega verse fics that have thousands of kudos. My guess is that it speaks as to the demographic of the fandom (especially Sherlock where the writers and readers are mostly immature teenagers).

I guess what I'm saying is, don't worry about it too much anon. HS!AUs are cheap filler, the fic equivalent of tabloids.
