I have seen some breath-taking, intensely hot AND intelligent, canonically accurate fics written... that have had a fraction of the reviews of the seme/uke-chan equivalent. And I honestly don't know why. Those intelligent fics were superior in every way, even in smut. And the only difference was that the characters weren't horrifically OOC in the former. It... makes me question the IQ of most fanfic readers.

Ultimately, it's to each their own. But as someone who appreciates the intelligent fic, I know lack of encouragement leads thoughtful writers like yourself to say "Why am I even writing this if nobody ultimately cares?" And I just wanted to say... people do care. *I* care and I appreciate your attention to detail and thoughtfulness. Sadly, quality of writing is not correlated to review count. We have all found this out the hard way, stumbling on a fic that had 2000+ reviews (it must be good, right?!) that made you want to claw your eyes out with how awful the characterization was.

As a means to push back against this, I've started leaving monstrously long, detailed reviews on the fics that I enjoyed. After all, if you put so much effort into setting up themes, character development, and you did your research... you deserve someone to recognize your hard work. I'm just sorry that it doesn't happen more often.

But keep up the good work. It's most likely not you, but fandom genuinely having shitty taste in literature. When you're writing Lord of the Rings, you're not going to satisfy people looking to read Fifty Shades of Twilight.
