Re: banned books

If you like dark humor at all, I'd go for Catch-22. It's an incredibly incisive, incredibly hilarious look at the nonsensicality of war. Of the books I've read off that list, it's my second favorite, after Lord of the Rings.

Other ones I've read and enjoyed:
Slaugterhouse 5, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, 1984, Brave New World.

It's a good exercise in abdsurdity.

But for the love of god, not Catcher in the Rye. Holdon is such a shit.

He IS a shit, isn't he? And he has the most obnoxious, aggressive fans all over the internet, for some inexplicable reason. They get extremely frothy at the mouth whenever they detect dislike of Holden or Catcher in general.

Ha! I loved reading Catcher in the Rye but am inclined to agree with you about Holden. He's such an awful person. The only thing I knew about it beforehand was how much everyone loved him and identified with him and I ended up severely disappointed. I kept thinking he'd change more by the end, but no.

I liked Catcher in the Rye, too. And while yeah, Holden's not a very good person, he's also pretty broken, which can be an interesting headspace for reading.

You are absolutely right about that.
