What do you usually like to read? They're all really different. Beloved is not at all like Cat's Cradle. I've read all of the books on that list except for the Faulkner - the one I love the most is Brideshead Revisted, but it's not necessarily the best.

'Brideshead' is in my top-five most favorite books ever. :)

Evelyn Waugh was kind of an awful person, but when I think about him crossing out "Alastair" and writing in "Sebastian" in the rough draft of Brideshead Revisited, I want to make him a cup of sympathetic tea.

Heee!

In what way was he an awful person? He seemed to have many close and long-lasting friendships in his life.....

He ate his children's sugar rations. :(

Fellow guest at a party: Oh, Mr. Waugh, I have just been reading your new book Brideshead Revisited, and I think it's one of the best books I've ever read.

EW: I thought it was good myself, but now that I know that a vulgar, common American woman like yourself admires it, I am not so sure.

I wrote BR fic for Yuletide a couple of years ago, and I kept that quote in my notebook to remind myself not to be too intimidated. :)

He could be a very good friend - the Mitford/Waugh letters are fabulous.

Heeee. I dunno - i might have said the same thing to someone who was actually vulgar and common, but yeah....
