I'd recommend picking James Joyce, Ulysses. Basically because you don't have to read it. Just read a few pages at random to get the feel of the book and pick up a few cites, and then you can make up whatever the hell you like for the rest of the assignment. Not as if anyone can say you are wrong with that book.
