really, why? i mean it's a criticism of the society of the time but it's not super bleak or anything

i'm not american so maybe that's why i don't get it

It still holds up as a strong critique of modern American values, particularly anything and everything to do with the "American Dream." I couldn't find any way to reasonably argue with its criticisms, as much as I wanted to, and since it doesn't really present a meaningful alternative, I felt a bit empty afterwards. I still don't know how I might respond properly to it.
