Hulu Plus vs Netflix

(Anonymous) 2014-03-19 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
I asked some friends for their opinion, but a lot just said to use youtube or download torrents. I figured you all could be more helpful!

The problem is, I'm trying to decide between getting Hulu+ and Netflix for my monthly video service. I like watching anime and cartoons; live-action shows, not so much, since I don't really follow any of the popular ones right now. Which service is better for what I'm wanting? I know Hulu+ has ads, but I don't mind them, since I just check email or play a game until they're finished. I've been using regular, free Hulu, but they only offer so many episodes of the shows I've been watching for free and the rest are subscription-only. Which one should I get? What are your experiences with both services? Thanks for your help!

they work pretty much the same way but there are different shows available on each, like I think Community is only on Hulu but some other stuff is only on Netflix. So, if there's a particular thing you're interested in, I'd check out to see which one had it.

nvmind I just read the things you said about that

this comment isn't very helpful I'm sorry

My feeling is that Hulu/Hulu Plus is most valuable for recent episodes of TV shows or shows that are currently airing, and for classic, critically-beloved movies. In contrast, Netflix is most valuable for older shows and older episodes of shows currently airing, and a more diverse/populist selection of movies.

So.... go off that. Personally I use Netflix - the ads on Hulu really get on my nerves, I like the Netflix interface a lot more, and the selection is closer to what interests me.

I have and like both. But Netflix certainly has more anime and cartoons as Hulu, so it might be better for what you are looking for.

It sounds like you should figure out which one offers more of the shows you want to watch. Does Netflix still have an option for a free trial? I have Netflix and love it, rarely any issues with connection, but I don't watch what you're looking for. I've used my friend's Hulu plus a couple times without complaints but I think Netflix worked a little better connection-wise.

I have both and like both, but I use them for different things.

Hulu+ I mostly use for currently-airing shows (and actually, most of my recent anime watching, although that's more coincidence than anything.)

Netflix I mostly use for movies (particularly documentaries) and TV show binge-watching. I haven't used it as much lately, because for whatever reason they never seem to have whatever show it is I'm craving.

Interface-wise, they're about the same, especially if you don't care about ads.

Depending on how much you care about anime vs. other things, it might be worth checking out Crunchyroll. They have a really good selection of anime, and they get rights for subtitling absurdly quickly, which is nice when you're watching a current show.

Personally, I'd suggest listing out a handful of shows you're interested in, and seeing which service has more of them. (I think you can check netflix's selection without being a member, but I may be wrong about that.)

Re: Crunchyroll

You can also watch a lot of stuff for free (though current shows might be delayed a week or so). They also have a lot of K-dramas, though I don't know how much of that is behind the paywall.

For anime, I use a mix of Netflix and crunchyroll, and between the two of them I'm fairly satisfied with the selection. I haven't used Hulu much, but I get the impression that there's more live-action stuff, which I don't really watch. (I could be wrong about that, though, since, like I said, I haven't used it much.)

I think for anime hulu definitely has a lot more, and if you don't mind ads then you may be fine with hulu plus.

I only have netflix because I hate ads and find that hulu's player is not reliable. Netflix often takes a long time to get series up and can have a somewhat limited selection but it suits my needs better then paying for hulu.

Choose Hulu if you want to stream anime, it has a much bigger streaming selection than Netflix does. Netflix has a comparably huge selection of DVD anime with the added benefit of no ads (that's a huge thing for me, hence why I mostly stick with Netflix) and a fantastic selection of Western cartoons that doesn't compare to Hulu's Western stuff, but the only Netflix DVD plan that's as cheap as Hulu streaming is the one-DVD-out-at-a-time one, which can be a bit of a pain when you're trying to blow through a long series. Fortunately, neither subscription is contract, so when you've exhausted the offerings of one service, you can just switch to another.

I have both, and Hulu Plus has a better selection of anime (including simulcasts). Netflix's selection is okay, but it's mostly Big Name Titles and if you prefer dub over sub.

Of course, Crunchyroll is king for anime, in my opinion. Of the legit sites, that is.

Both have a decent selection of other animation as well, though if you're a fan of Disney movies, Netflix has a bunch of them, while Hulu doesn't have any.

Hope this helps!
