(Anonymous) 2014-03-19 05:52 am (UTC)(link)I think that mentor is more of a shorthand for adult figure, really... and in this case, adult figure at least trying to exercise some form of positive influence.
But fandom exaggerating relationships is what fandom does. I mean, any time you have a non-canon ship, they're exaggerating the relationship into romance, you know?
So in this case, shipping ereri means that you find their dynamic interesting and that you would like to see it turned into a romance, because you feel the characters have potential for an interesting romantic dynamic.
(look, fandom makes Armin out to be a tactical genius the likes which this earth has never seen, and most of his ideas so far, while sound, are hardly earth-shatteringly brilliant)

(Anonymous) 2014-03-19 09:22 am (UTC)(link)The thing is, though, to me talking about Levi being a positive influence would be extrapolation as well. Let's be fair, SNK is not very characterization-heavy at all. So I figure that shippers a)think both Levi and Eren are interesting, b) see under-utilized potential for Levi being a positive influence on Eren, and c) think that they would be even more interesting in a romantic relationship trying to work things out.
I mean it's the difference between shipping and canon. Yeah, canonically all you have are some hints or ideas or what-if-maybes, but people who like the ship build romantic interest on those hints, flesh them out, and bam!ship. I mean this is shipping 101, it's true for any pairing ever.
I mean what about all those pairs of characters who barely talked to each other? I mean, what about Jean/Marco??? who did not interact very much in canon at all? But I get where the shippers are coming from - they see the bits of potential between Jean and Marco and build on it.
