Is the translation really that hideous? I remember it being dated (I cringe every time Cloud says he'll 'rap' with someone) but not really that bad, as far as readability went.

And man, I'm a complete graphics whore, but that bit in the Shinra building where all the guards have disappeared and you're following a trail of blood up to the top of it? Creepiest sequence ever. You'd have to be a real tool not to appreciate that.

There's some really hilarious grammar issues with it. I've been replaying it lately and I'm tempted to start a drinking game where I drink every time the tense changes in the middle of a sentence. Compared to something like FFXII's translation (heck, Vagrant Story was a late PSX game, and it had a phenomenal translation too), the FFVII one just comes off as really childish. I mean, it gets the job done (for the most part - "attack when the tail is up!"), but that's really the best that can be said for it.

I remember literally leaping up when I saw the big snake on a stick. The trail of blood was seriously awesome too. That game had some really weird camera angles for some cut scenes, and combined with the background music, there was an awful lot of visual effect. While I'm replaying it, I keep thinking that lot of newer games don't really feel like they've gone quite as far in terms really experimenting with those elements in the way FFVII did.

But I remember showing a friend - whose first videogame was KH2 - the FFVII recap on the AC dvd, and it wasn't until it was halfway done that she asked me if the blocks on their arms were supposed to be hands.
