The first time I saw part of this movie (just a scene or two on tv) as a kid, I thought Calpurnia was their step-mom, so I get it.

I thought this too, from reading the book. Of course, I was quite young and live in a country that doesn't have live-in housekeepers (except maybe for the extremely rich?) so I didn't really understand their actual dynamic either.

If it was anyone besides Atticus, I'd be so uncomfortable with this, but as it is who it is...

Yeah, I think with Atticus it works, though wasn't Calpurnia married? I can't see him having an affair with a married woman. I could be wrong though, but I think Jem and Scout even met her kids.

You know, I don't recall, and googling it is giving me only the fact that she has a son (Zeebo), but nothing about a husband, or other children. She could be a widow, same as Atticus being a widower maybe?

Have you read/seen To Kill a Mockingbird? People are probably replying like that because Atticus Finch is one of the few fictional characters whose integrity is above reproach.
