Good Movies or Books or Documentaries about Harry Houdini

(Anonymous) 2014-03-20 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm just all of a sudden really interested in him and want to know more, but hopefully not from a really long and mostly irrelevant biography. So...any good movies? Or if not, any good books or documentaries?

I liked this documentary, myself.

As I recall these were pretty good:

The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America's First Superhero by William Kalush

The Last Greatest Magician in the World: Howard Thurston Versus Houdini & the Battles of the American Wizards by Jim Steinmeyer (Steinmeyer designs magic illusions for a lot of famous magicians and has written a great deal on the subject of magic and history. Good stuff.)

I learned all I know about Houdini from this comics artist:

Admittedly I don't know much about Houdini still. But I had the consolation of looking at nice art while I didn't learn.

There's a miniseries coming out in May.

It's from the History channel and Houdini is played by Adrien Brody.

I have a soft spot for the Wonderful World of Disney's Young Harry Houdini starring Wil Wheaton.

The Great Houdini (1976) is supposed to be pretty good. It stars Paul Michael Glaser (Starsky and Hutch) and one the writers is Peter Benchley (Jaws).

Do you have a source for Young Harry Houdini? I saw it when it aired, and not since, and I WANT TO.

Sorry. I don't think it was ever released. You might be able find it somewhere online. Here's the imdb page: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094362/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_88
