Thank you for reminding me of that story! That's one of the stories that shows that what Holmes is really a great guy and a big part of his detective thing is being nice to others. That's an important part of who Holmes is that a lot of adaptations get wrong - yeah Holmes likes to show off, but that doesn't mean he's not actually a nice person.

ACD Holmes can definitely be a jerk sometimes, but it's usually an unintentional side-effect of the showing off and his melodramatic tendencies (e.g. The Dying Detective, Hound of the Baskervilles). He's not an asshole just for kicks like Cumberlock is, or as overtly socially inept as RDJ's Holmes.

Holmes isn't socially inept at all, really. He does behave rudely and thoughtlessly at times, but it's not because he doesn't know any better and/or is too much of a jerk to apologize when his faux pas is pointed out to him.
