No no you're totally right. At this point, most of the big fandoms were all anime, so a popular opinion was "anime boys are so much better than real boys <33"

It's only in recent years that things here have shifted to western media and real life actors.

I think you can see this manifested in irl at stuff like cons. A couple years ago it would've been all anime all the time. Now you have people dressing up as characters from all sorts of things.

I think there was bit of the older fandoms keeping separate from the younger fandoms.

Where as now, the internet makes it easier or kids in younger fandoms to find what the adults are into.
