The Giver Trailer

It's been quite some time since I've read the books, but I don't recall there being a girl who knew about the outside world like Jonas/The Giver do? Did they really shoehorn in a random love interest? Also, the colors. So many colors. Such a shame!

I think it's Fiona.

Oh, I was starting to wonder if those scenes were about Rosemary now that I think about it. Hmmm.

I thought Rosemary was... dead?

Speaking of Rosemary, she's apparently being played by Taylor Swift in this movie. In case you needed yet more confirmation that this movie is going to suck.

she had Jonas's job but she couldn't handle it and released herself iirc

The super sci-fi tone is really weird to me. That's not how I remember the feel of the book at all. Spaceship, what? Is my memory off? I thought it was all identical little houses and then sledding.

I always thought of some hippy commune. Like nice little shacks, the type you see in Key West. Everything is within walking distance or biking distance. Like there wouldn't be much need for anything motorized. Everything would be fuzzy and warm like a the most relaxing bath ever. So, even when you turn twelve and are told the truth that how screwed up society is, you wouldn't care because it works. And as long as you have your happy, warm bath feeling you are willing to go along.

The trailer makes it all feel sterile and cold except for the little park scene. I would not want to live there even if murder was off the menu. Too cold.

Exactly! I thought it was supposed to be a near-hokey idyllic, small town type.

Yeah, the impression I got from the book was that things were supposed to look 'old-timey', like 20s or 40s. Maybe that was my own preference, but I don't think anything indicated semi-spaceships either :/

Same. I didn't think they had much technology at all.

the fact that the movie is in color and spaceships kind of blow my mind. We had a slight discussion on this yesterday and we all said it was nothing like the book.

It is so sad how they are going for a Hunger Games look. Because in the end, people will be comparing it to that series rather than letting the movie stand on its own.

This movie could have been done on an indie budget with little known actors and it could still have been amazing. Now it looks like a who is whom with a FX budget of a god.

YES! Exactly! anon yesterday said this

"Maybe just go for the obvious comparisons and call it "The Divergent Giver Games in the City of Bones (vaguely inspired by The Giver).""

Which is what I feel like it is. I would much rather have a movie faithful to the film with unknown actors. It really needs to be shot in black and white too to get the feel of the it.

1. Shot in black and white
2. Jonas needs to be played by a pre-teen and not a twenty something. Heck, I'll even take a young teenager like fourteen or fifteen. But he must be young for that innocence of youth to come through.
3. No music soundtrack. Just a clean, practical sounds (footfalls, doors creaking open and close, The Giver closing a book shut, etc.) I think the lack of any music would be unnerving and would give an idea at how blank this society is.
4. Lesser known actors. People should be wanting to see the movie because of the book and not because the movie looks like a Night of a Thousand Stars
5. Stick to the book. No one else "awakens." No million budget FX shots. No unraveling of society in revolution. (I always thought how saw it was in the book how aside from The Giver, no one knew Jonas plans. They probably thought he took the baby and went for a stroll only to drown in the river somewhere. And society echoed mourned for a few seconds and moved on.)

I agree with this. I'm really surprised no one has made a movie of the book before. I think the introduction of music as Jonas learns would be a great way to differentiate the blankness of society.

Bah, not looking forward to this movie.

The color doesn't disappoint me as much now, I'm betting they'll do something like have The Giver go "What color is this" and Jonas goes "What's color?"

So disappoint that it's in color.

(And also that it generally doesn't seem to resemble The Giver at all)

Well, that...tells me nothing at all. But - Meryl!

I don't mind that it's in color. Yes, they could have done it in sepia or black and white, but I think it could still be effective when we start seeing Jonah ask about things like Fiona's hair and get confused responses, until it's revealed that it's *seeing color* that's special.

Anyway, it looks like it's going to be crap.
