So I'm thinking of joining Reddit...

(Anonymous) 2014-03-21 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
Good idea y/n?

It seems they have a group for pretty much every subject under the sun so on the one hand it sounds interesting but on the other the reputation of the people that post there isn't the greatest from what I've heard so IDK.

Thoughts?

Go for it.

It's like any other large community. There's areas that are great and not as great.

Just find the parts you like and you'll have fun!

It's really not as bad as people make it out to be, because it isn't one cohesive whole. There's a community for just about every interest, and there are people from all walks of life who adhere to every ideology under the sun. You can pretty easily find a niche that suits you.

Eh, it's a bit like 4chan. When it's bad, it's horrible but there are still some areas that are pretty fun and engaging. I say go for it. There are a ton of different subreddits and I'm sure one of them would tickle your fancy. If not, then no harm done

General advice that made it easier for me

If you can stomach tumblr, you can stomach Reddit. I don't mean that as an insult against either site. Just that big communities have their ups and downs, and if the downs are passable to you, then go for it.

Advice to make it easier:

1. Unsub from all of the default subs immediately, then go back and see if any of them hold interest. Many of them are acceptable so long as you swear off the comments section. Although /r/AskReddit has moments.
2. Don't sub to any special interest groups. Even if they seem benign at first, a lot of the time you start seeing a very specific culture develop that insists one way of thinking or acting that gets frustrating.
3. Be careful about fandom subs. If you still love something, make sure the attitude about the work in question is positive before subbing. /r/doctorwho and /r/thelastairbender are pretty negative about their respective shows right now, for instance.
4. Get Reddit Enhancement Suite.
5. Some subreddits aren't worth subscribing to, but if you don't want to lose track of them, put them on your dash to check the weekly or monthly Top Posts.

Might as well, right? If you end up not liking it you don't have to use the account. Like the others said, reddit is pretty hit and miss. Then again, most sites are.

I basically like reddit because it's an easy way to keep track of news and information; you can easily subscribe to a ton of relevant subreddits and have everything that interests you delivered in one place. I don't even comment (I have... Maybe once?), just browse and lurk.
