The Highwayman is one of my favorite poems! It was written by Alfred Noyes, in case anyone's curious. (And the song you're referring to is probably the one by Loreena McKennitt.)

I love John Denver to bits, but I think OP was talking more about old traditional songs -- y'know, stuff that no one really knows who wrote it.

Ah, really? Cool! The first time I heard it was at a Boy Scout thing where teh guy sung/said it, so I was never sure which came first. ^^;

So, ballads, then? Cool. :D

Ooh, that sounds really awesome! It's quite fun to have such a clear memory of when you first heard a song. It makes it even more special -- if it's a song you ended up loving, I mean.

Yeah! And it was the perfect setting for it too, nighttime with a big moon in teh sky (don't remember if it was full or not though), a small hand drum, tendrils of fog creeping, no buildings in site because camping! :D Boyscouts as an organization is pretty shitty in some regards, but I will always have fond memories of the trips. :3
