Re: Pilot episodes that you really love
Basically the same as Star Trek for the Starsky and Hutch pilot, which had a level of grit and an aura of paranoia and isolation that was never shoved to the surface quite as visibly ever again as far as I can remember (although that pilot had the excuse of having the budget, screentime, and flexibility of a TV movie.) It did establish some of my favorite elements of the show very strongly right out of the gate, like the fact that the justice system was rotten at the core.
I also liked the pilot of Six Feet Under way more than the rest of the show. Tbh, if the rest of the show had been more like the pilot, I might have kept watching. I loved the black comedy and the fake ads and the intentional hallucinations of dead people that were phased out after a few episodes in.
And Sherlock's A Study in Pink. *sigh* I wish it had been a standalone TV movie, to be honest. It would have worked so much better that way -- as a unique and wonderfully creative modern take on Sherlock Holmes rather than it's own separate entity with it's own internal plot and meaning. Because that internal plot and meaning turned out to be fucking awful and infuriating as a thing in itself rather than as a purely derivative work.
Re: Pilot episodes that you really love
(Anonymous) 2014-03-22 04:13 am (UTC)(link)I do love TOS's "Where No Man Has Gone Before" - like you said, the tone of the episode is just quite unique. In spite of the sexism (what are you going to do - it was the late 60s), there's so much I like in that episode. The barrier at the edge of the galaxy; the sudden development of their esp abilities, and how quickly that power changed them (and their creepy silver eyes); that empty supply planet freaked me out as a kid, and the poor guy that got killed by the cables. And Kirk having to deal with his (admittedly crappy) BFF, only to get a new BFF.
tl;dr - I also love this episode. (And I like their shirts in this ep. They look nice and warm.)
