yes hello friend i am here

fuck i keep forgetting my password. well anyway helpfultransinfo (http://helpfultransinfo.tumblr.com) is geared heavily towards FTMs seeking medical transition or non-hormonal transition. lots of great information.

psychiatric diagnosis is required in most states (meaning you will likely need a letter from a therapist), but there are some states/areas that have "informed consent" programs, meaning you can meet with an endocrinologist to be physically examined and begin HRT after being certain that you know all of the side effects and risks involved.

(even if you are living somewhere with an informed consent program, i would urge you to speak to a therapist if you can before and during your transition because it's incredibly stressful no matter how sure you feel.)

as for a timeline, unfortunately that entirely depends on a lot of things, like 1) your health insurance plan & doctors you have available 2) financial resources for doctors, hormones and possible operations and most importantly 3) you. vocal minorities on tumblr argue that transitioning is not a big deal, but unfortunately most people irl disagree and you will soon discover (if you haven't already) how big of a deal it's going to be.

old specifications required 2 years of "lived experience" before qualifying for transition, but that has changed. the DSM (the manual psychiatrists use in the US) was revised recently and what used to be called "gender identity disorder" has now been re-classified as "gender dysphoria." basically, the idea is that you have a strong disconnect between your physical body and your mental "map" of what your body should be.

a few more things:

- the majority of therapists and psychiatrists DO NOT specialize in treating gender dysphoria. if you meet with one or the other and feel like their personal politics are going to prevent them from giving you the help you need, don't go to them. i got lucky and had a therapist who (while she didn't know anything about being transgender) was willing to read up on it and learn about how she could help me. my first psychiatric meeting did not go as well. just try not to take it personally.
- there are health risks posed by going on T, namely higher blood pressure and possibly a shorter life span. read about the bad things as well as the good things. read accounts from people who have "de-transitioned" after being on T for a while. this is a long process so don't feel rushed to figure everything out and don't be afraid to question yourself.
