20 - I love the pairing, but even I'll admit that the vast majority of fic out there is horribly done. Because you're right; Ryou's not a perfect angel, and 'Bakura' is cool because he's a bastard. Their relationship is not fluffy, and I like it when it's portrayed like the mindfuck it is. Of course, I've also seen a few AUs that end with the pair in love, and they're written well enough and IC enough to make me believe it's possible. But they're definitely in the minority. I think I'd recommend Faust and Song for a Snake Charmer's Pipe for well written fic if you were interested in at least trying it out, though. I wasn't aware it permeated the fandom so much...I'd always assumed Seto/Jou and Yami/Yuugi were just as large, if not larger...

26 - YES. OMG YES. I LOL'D SO HARD.

44 - I sort of agree. Writing fanfic is a hell of a lot different than reading it, and sometimes I just want to read. But I write anyway, because if I manage to write it well enough, maybe it'll influence others to write, also. My OTP for my main fandom? A year and a half ago, there was less than a page's worth of fics on ffnet for it. But I started actively writing the pairing, and some people who enjoyed my fics started writing their own, and then others began writing, and now there's no shortage of it. Most of it's sorta bleh, of course, but hey. It's a lot better than it once was.

Well, I probably exaggerated a little when saying people act like it's the only pairing in the fandom... Ryou is one of my absolute favorite characters, so when I go looking for fic it's usually about him, and like, 90% of the ship!fic with him is paired with Yami no Bakura (whether it's badfic or not). The other two pairings you mentioned, while I won't deny their prevalence, don't tend to stand out as much to me because I'm not as fond of the characters within.
