It's reaaally easy to be popular in this fandom, OP. You write decent fic/draw decent art+you ship Johnlock=raging popularity spreading like wildfire.

...and this would be why I bailed on the fandom, OP. Fun fact: I bailed on the fandom before I bailed on the show, but now that I have happily eliminated both from my life, I feel 100% that I have dodged a bullet, given the amount of sheer histrionic insanity that has occurred both onscreen and off, WRT BBC Sherlock.

This is true of like 60% of all mega-popular fandoms, tbh. It's all about how people comparatively view you after the last 30 fics they read. ;)

i'm sure you could draw a parallel between the fandom's 'dysfunction' and the fiasco that is the show itself

as we say in france, 'qui se ressemble s'assemble'

I have such a guilty pleasure reading posts that call BBC Sherlock a fiasco.

...because they are rare gems, shining brightly in the darkness that is squee-filled, over-hormonal Tumblr?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-23 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
It's probably because you write porn or post halfway decent graphics on tumblr. There's no correlation between mental health and popularity in the Sherlock fandom.

I've been around Sherlock for over a year now, and I have no idea who is popular and who isn't. I can tell you who writes decent Sherlock/Lestrade, but that's about it. Having such a narrow interest is lonely, but it also avoids pointless drama.

OMG you mentioned my ship. *waves flag*

I mention it often. :)

Maybe. Sherlock fandom is full of cheese...

Sherlock/Lestrade recs please.

My fave Sherstrade writer deleted all her fics from A03 a couple of years back. :(

This is about my favourite fic now, though there's only a hint of the ship in it, it's highly effective. Plotty comedy.

Who deleted their fics? I've only been around Sherlock fandom since January 2013 - I posted here and at FFA asking where I could find the Sherlock/Lestrade part of fandom.

Archea2 has put together a good list of S/L recs part 1 part 2

Some newer fics, relationship fics or pwp:
The Operative Word - Peevee
Lighting Up - Persiflager
Waterlooed - Archea2
Mancunian Matters - Thirdbird
Once Upon a December - Christinefromsherwood
The Bastard's Back - Unovis
I almost didn't read grassle's 5 Times Sherlock and Lestrade Never Met series because of the summary, but I loved the second fic in the series and the last one.

I'm sorry! None of those are plotty comedy.

I write case fics, which have plots and are supposed to be funny. For example:
High Windows - Sherlock tries to solve a case even though Lestrade might have personal reasons for wanting it to stay a mystery.
Sherlock and the Queen of Winter is fantasy/comedy case fic.

grassle is my favourite Sherstrade writer. I love, love her writing. She deleted on A03 a few years ago but I see she's come back.

She used to have a lot more fics up on A03 than she has now. Including a plotty medieval Sherlock fic (kind of a Caedfael mashup) that included Sherlock trotting along on a memorably tiny horse. So much love for that.

That Sebastian Wilkes/Sherlock longfic she has up is extremely enjoyable too, even though I'd never thought of the pairing before.

Thanks for taking the trouble to give so many lovely recs. I shall peruse them at my leisure. I've read quite a few of those authors before so I imagine many will be fun re-reads.

I didn't know the fics had been deleted - the medieval one sounds like it was great. I wanted to like the Sebastian Wilkes/Sherlock fic because of the belle and sebastian titles, but I can really only get into S/L and gen. Even though not many S/L fics are being posted now, it's still more active than any of my other fandoms.

You are dysfunction?

[personal profile] elephantinegrace 2014-03-23 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
That's pretty impressive, actually.

And the trick to getting popular in any fandom is writing good porn. That's about it.

Not necessarily. I've been middling popular in a couple of bigger fandoms while writing around 70% gen. I do, however, write lots of h/c friendship fic and a bunch of action-y AUs. Tropey goodness will do in lieu of porn, if you're that way inclined ;)

Is it easier or harder to be a BNF in big fandoms?
