"IT'S JUST A KID'S MOVIE STOP CRITICIZING IT" is still a thing, eh? :/ And yes, kids are smarter than we give them credit for. I'm pretty sure a lot of people questioned stuff they saw on TV when they were young. Obviously not to the degree that adults can, but it's not like kids take EVERY SINGLE THING at face value.

As for the whole cultural misrepresentation debacle in this movie, it's kind of a mess. One character wears clothes that were apparently Sami-inspired though it's never explicitly stated that he is Sami. And then there was this giant argument about whether Sami are white or POC and it was just not pretty. Guess it didn't help that most of the people arguing knew zilch about Sami culture in general.

Re: your second paragraph, that whole mess was even more frustrating because of the people who paid lip service to listening to actual Sami people but only listened to the ones who supported their side of the argument. I saw Authentic Sami People trotted out to support both sides.

Yes, I witnessed that as well. It's understandable that the Sami themselves would be divided on the matter but I felt like no one really paid attention to them other than: "REAL SAMI PERSON SAID THIS THEREFORE IT IS TRUTH AND YOU ARE WRONG!" Like they were just mouthpieces for validation or something. Does that make sense? :T

Definitely makes sense. That's how I saw it too.

That whole Sami debacle still rankles me. They obviously didn't know what they were talking about, they just wanted to jump on the controversy bandwagon. I wanted to say "Go to the library and read a damn book, because you can't seem to recognize that tumblr user so-and-so isn't a verified source."

Oh gosh, that debacle was, well, it was a debacle.
A lot of it boiled down, on the one side, to: Sami are oppressed. White people are never oppressed. Therefore, Sami people are not white and to say otherwise is racist and whitewashing and you're whitecishetneurotypical scum.
And so I tumblr saviour'd the terms "Disney" and "Frozen" and my life has been much more peaceful.

Kristoff (and the Ice Harvesters) are Saami. Jennifer Lee confirmed it and it says so in the script.
