Yeah, as much as I love how easy to navigate AO3 is, I really hate how people use the tagging system sometimes. My pet peeve in my fandom is my favorite character (who is very minor) getting tagged in fanfics where he doesn't even appear. I'd say roughly half of the fics in his tag on AO3 are ones where he either doesn't appear or is maybe mentioned for a line or two. All because the author for some ungodly reason decided they needed to tag every single character in the canon.

I don't know if this happens in other fandoms - canon-novelizations are a pretty big genre in mine and that's usually where it happens - but it is the most obnoxious thing.

I hate overtagging for that reason. Every time I see a fic with a huge list of character tags, I can't help thinking that the people looking for stories with minor characters X/Y/Z who barely even appear in the story would be so pissed.
