I had the impression the OP was annoyed by fans capitalizing The Canon, as if it was the only one, and getting all precious about it.

DA

that's my take on it too.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-24 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Except for how Sherlock Holmes fans don't actually ever do this.

Ayrt

I'm not in fandom, but I've seen similar sentiments expressed by a few Sherlock Holmes before. Whether it was tongue in cheek like the anon below said, I don't know.

Except for how they do. Take a look through this comm sometime when people are discussing Sherlock Holmes.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-25 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Never seen it, unless all references to 'canon' offend you, in which case, hard cheese.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-25 11:47 am (UTC)(link)
Not the Sherlock Holmes fans you've been exposed to, maybe.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-24 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
But they don't. Except maybe sometimes when they're being facetious and tongue-in-cheek.

Maybe that's the problem? The OP doesn't realize that 90% of the time, Holmesians are being completely tongue-in-cheek about their canon-analyzing srs bsns?

+1

Some of canon fandom can look very stuffy, but nevertheless they're making in-jokes and telling bad puns, etc. Analyzing the canon as if Holmes and Watson really existed is called "the game" for goodness sake. There's a great deal of serious silliness and silly seriousness.

This.

There's a teeny hint of snootiness in Sherlock Holmes fandom, because it's a very old fandom, and it can play the "I was here first" card in almost any situation. But it's not real snootiness, it's very self-aware and silly snootiness, and it's kind of an in-joke, and people generally don't really mean it.

Can I just go off topic and say I love your icon?
Stargate! Rush!
