Fandom Gaffes

Name some of your fandom gaffes from when you started a new fandom, new community, or when you weren't new in any respect but goofed anyway.

The first time I found slash, it was for Harry Potter so I assumed it was some sort of joke - because who the hell would think of gay people being in Harry Potter? So I told the writer she was homophobic and all this other stuff. Oddly, I apologized years later and she claimed she'd never written slash in her life, but I know it was her because she ended up being a bit of a BNF and seemed really nice, and I always felt so guilty.

(In fairness to me, the first slashfic I ever read was pretty.... "lol gey ppl guys", so that didn't help.)

I thought slash referred to like slasher movies and I was really surprised by how much there was of that in fandom before I figured it out.

On the flip side I heard of slash before I heard of the term slasher movie, guess how confused I was the first time someone asked me if I 'wanted to go see a slasher movie?'.

So did I. I kept thinking it meant like really heavy gore and blood and kept wondering why all the summaries only mentioned romance.

- I used to complain to authors for not updating. It was so immature and I didn't really mean it, but looking back, WTF, self? Karma's a bitch, I never finish WIPs.

- I actually didn't realize what "ship" actually meant; a friend who wasn't even in fandom pieced it together within seconds.

Me: Yeah, I ship (pairing).

Her: Oh, ship! Like relation-ship!

Me: ... Exactly! I've been in fandom for five years, how did I not know that???

When I was 8 I went into a Harry Potter chatroom, called myself TheRealSlimShady, and super sketchily hit on a girl who was probably a teenager and clearly uncomfortable. I wasn't even into girls; I just thought pretending to be someone you're not was the whole point of the internet, so why not reinvent myself as a sketchball teenage guy? Ugh. I still wish I could apologize to that girl.

Was it one of the AOL HP chatrooms? I went into those a lot.

I made a secret about this one actually. When I first started reading Sherlock fic (the first British thing I read fic about), I thought chuffed mean turned on. So I would get really confused when John was chuffed about seeing Mrs. Hudson. Honestly, I still have to think about it for a couple of seconds.

That's hilarious. If "chuffed" meant "turned on", it would completely change the meaning of every Wodehouse story.

From the UK English side: I read one Sherlock fic in which young Mycroft told off young Sherlock for his roughhousing. I thought it was a terribly clever and old-fashioned way for Mycroft to speak. I'd never heard the word before except in Victorian literature.

A year later I realised it's a common enough term in US English and the writer had been American. I felt a bit stupid.

Your chuffed story is way better.

I think I remember that secret! Or at least, I seemed to remember something about thinking "chuffed" = "getting a chubby." That's the specific phrasing that is sticking in my mind.

One time a few adult HP fans I knew had started a HP chatroom for adults; technically I was a teenager, but sixteen so kind of on that border. So I invited some of my fellow teen HP fan friends... and they turned it into a complete high school cafeteria session. Everyone hated me after that.

For some reason I shipped Briscoe/Curtis so I went on fanfiction.net, found a random Law & Order fic author and in a review on their fic, asked them if they knew where I could find that ship.

I'm pretty sure they weren't even writing for regular L&O it was probably SVU or something and they got really mad at told me they don't write Briscoe/Curtis and why the hell was I asking them that on their completely unrelated fic.

I wrote an angry comment on an AMV for Loveless when I was... 15-ish? Can't even remember why, I couldn't stand that series a few years later.

In middle school I started writing a Charmed AU, and I tagged it (or whatever the tagging equivalent was at the time) Piper/Leo fully intending for them to be the focus, but Prue was my favorite character so most of the story actually ended up centering around her. To make matters even worse it wound up being over 100 chapters without an end in sight before I abandoned it.

Years later I was still getting requests for updates--at least until I stopped checking the email address associated with that FFN account. I kind of have to judge people's taste if they want more of that particular fic tbh.

Re: Fandom Gaffes

I'd been a round a while, so I can't even blame inexperience on this one.

I was in a fandom where one of the actors in a TV series was famous for wearing ugly clothes as an amusing fashion statement. Someone new to the fandom had made an icon of him, and it was of him in one of these wonderfully ugly outfits and the image itself was in bad focus and with pretty ugly lettering. I thought it was deliberate and I told the person their icon was brilliantly ugly, meaning it as a compliment.

It did not go down well. I was told I'd hurt the person's feelings greatly. I had to do a huge grovel.

I stayed off the internet for a few months after that as there was obviously something wrong with me. I still feel confusion about how I got it so wrong.

I still haven't gotten over my first impression of fics marked "Teen" as being high school AUs. As a rating it's meaningless to me, so I have to really think about it.

I thought "slash" meant fic of any ship that wasn't canon, even if it was het.

Re: Fandom Gaffes

Long ago, in the early days of the internet, I left a fic review which included a "sorry, didn't like this part because of [reason]". It wasn't flat out negative, but it did have the words "didn't like" in it. The author was so obviously CRUSHED that I felt awful. I had to leave several anonymous positive reviews on some of their other fics to try to make them feel better.

Before that, I'd always thought that people who wrote fic wanted to improve their writing. I didn't realize that some just wanted to faff about and have fun.

I meant to talk to the person next to me in game and actually sent it to everyone on that planet. (MMO chat feature)

I'm...learning.

Got like 20 replies though and they were all pretty nice about it.

So far, the only Rent!fic I ever wrote/published was blatant self-insert MarySue with leukemia and all sorts of other things that would fill a MarySue bingo card. I was 14 or 15 when I posted it, and I got a couple really angry reviews from people who thought my first chapter was pretty good but were enraged by all the cliches surrounding my self-insert. Really embarrassing, in hindsight.
